I decided to take a break from portraits this week and instead, re-create a one of my watercolor paintings in thread.

I made the above painting referencing my own hand clutching wildflowers from my summer garden. Those flowers gave me SO much pleasure all year summer long and are still giving me pleasure in the form of art well into the fall and beyond. I’st all about the little things in life ya know?

I started by scanning my watercolor painting into my computer then printing the image on a piece of cotton fabric (unbleached muslin to be exact). I backed that piece of fabric with an identical sized piece of unbleached muslin then placed them in a six inch hoop.

Just as an aside, I thought I would show you the framed painting. I glued some dried flowers from the garden in a shadow box and framed the picture underneath. I have an unhealthy obsession with shadow boxes! They are so magical. I have them all over my house. When I took this picture the LED lights in the light box reflected onto the glass of the frame. Now I want to get tiny LED lights and string them inside the shadow box.

Here it is sans lights. Dried flowers are so awesome aren’t they?

I began to sew and used my painting as a reference. I exaggerated some of the shading for dramatic effect and changed the thread direction to shape the fingers.
