Last week I turned a photo into an embroidered painting. This week I thought it would be fun to transform a watercolor painting into an embroidered painting.
It all started with this innocent ‘toad in a hole’. I am not sure why I am so obsessed with this meal. Maybe it’s because the names for it are so cute. Maybe it is just because it is such a perfect meal….served with a bowl of fruit it has every food group. All three of my kids like this……A MIRACLE. Marketing is everything when it comes to serving kids and this one has it all; the name and the looks. It can easily be a breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Naturally when I love something this much it usually inspires a painting and, in this case, more than one.
Why stop there? I decided to find out what a toad-in-a-hole embroidery might look like.

What a fun project! The stitching totally transforms the look. I love the juxtaposition of the elegance of the thread vs. the quirkiness of the subject matter. I always start these projects thinking I am just going to add some highlights of embroidery to the watercolor but before I know it, I am ALL IN and can’t stop. Super fun. Will definitely be doing this again.
All in one stitch, too. The whole thing is made in straight stitch with the exception of a few small french knots in the bread pores.
