EMBROIDERY ON TOP OF A PHOTO PRINTED ON FABRIC

For just a fun little experimental project I decided to embroider a photo of my hand. I printed the photo from my home printer onto a piece of white cotton fabric. If you are interested in trying to print onto fabric from your home printer you can check out my post about it HERE.

I picked some colors of thread to try to match the colors in the photo. I began making small stitches to cover the corresponding colors on the photo. They were not a perfect match but I don’t think, in the end, it really matters. The background photo color shows through the stitches and it blends together visually. I really paid no attention to order as far as light and dark were concerned.

See the middle of the palm? The direction of the stitches help to define the shape by creating a line down the center.

I added more rusty highlights to the knuckles.

I added some more pink to cover the orange lines.

I stitched the fingers in a kind of arch direction to make a finger shape.

I left little spaces between the fingers to create lines to separate the fingers.

Here is where I have finished so far. I will probably add some gray-blue around the nails and try to blend the orange a little more with a lighter transitional color.

Maybe some more pink to layer over the patchier parts.

This was such a fun experiment! It really helped for practicing color palette choices, blending, stitch direction, and shading.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hope this inspires you to not take things so seriously and to let loose and experiment! It is so satisfying to not care about the outcome and just enjoy the journey!

Warmly,

Pam
